Cold Soba with Squid Tempura | 冷やしイカ天そば

Cold Hiyashi Soba buckwheat noodles topped with crispy squid tempura (Ikaten) and seaweed at Shanimuni in Asakusabashi, Tokyo.

The soba itself is simple and easy to eat, but the large pieces of squid tempura make this dish much more satisfying.

The tempura has a crispy coating, while the squid stays tender inside, and it works surprisingly well with the cold soba.

The wakame also adds a light, refreshing touch.

It is not a particularly complicated dish, but when you want something filling without being too heavy, this is a pretty good choice.

Katsudon with Soup | カツ丼・お吸い物付き

Traditional Japanese Katsudon (pork cutlet rice bowl with egg) served with a side soup at Shanimuni in Asakusabashi, Tokyo.

The pork cutlet is covered with soft egg and sweet-savory sauce, making the rice underneath incredibly easy to eat.

The onions soak up plenty of flavor, while the cutlet still has enough texture to keep the dish satisfying.

It is a classic, comforting katsudon rather than anything overly fancy, but that is exactly what makes it so good.

The light soup on the side also helps balance the richness of the bowl.

Mini Unagi Don | ミニうな丼

Mini Unadon (grilled eel rice bowl) with sweet soy glaze at Shanimuni restaurant in Asakusabashi, Tokyo.

This mini unagi rice bowl was a nice side dish to add when I wanted something a little more filling with my soba.

The eel was coated in a sweet-savory sauce and had a soft, rich texture that worked well with the rice.

I had this several years ago, so the menu and price may have changed since then, but at the time it was a satisfying little extra alongside the noodles.

Shanimuni is more than just a soba restaurant.

With rice bowls, tempura and other Japanese dishes on the menu, it is an easy place to stop by whether you want a quick lunch or a more relaxed meal.

Its location just a short walk from Asakusabashi Station also makes it a convenient neighborhood spot to remember.
