A Long-Running Ikebukuro Ramen Shop Famous for Rich Tonkotsu Shoyu

Mutekiya has been serving ramen in Ikebukuro since 1998 and has become one of the area’s best-known late-night ramen shops.

Its signature style is a rich tonkotsu-shoyu soup, with options ranging from the standard Genkotsu-men to the heavier Honmaru-X, which adds plenty of fresh back fat for extra richness.

The shop stays open until very late at night, making it especially popular with people looking for ramen after work, drinking, or a night out in Ikebukuro.

Genkotsu-men | げんこつ麺

Rich tonkotsu shoyu ramen with chashu, green onions and branded nori at Mutekiya Ikebukuro

The Genkotsu-men has a rich pork-based flavor, but it is much easier to eat than the heavier Honmaru-X.

The soup has plenty of umami and depth without feeling overly greasy, and the balance between the pork flavor and soy sauce makes it very satisfying.

Personally, I find this style easier to enjoy because it still has plenty of richness without becoming too heavy.

I used to come here often late at night, and this was the kind of ramen I could happily eat even after midnight.

Mutekiya is famous for its lines, especially during the daytime and evening.

However, in my experience, if you visit very late at night — especially after around 2:00 AM — there are many times when you can get in with little or no wait.

Since the restaurant stays open until 4:00 AM, it is one of the most convenient places in Ikebukuro for a serious bowl of ramen after midnight.
